Do you live in a democracy?

Brigid Gardner examines the flaws in our current voting system and what the alternatives are.

Brigid, a former headteacher of James Allen’s Girls’ School, is a member of Make Votes Matter and Humanists UK. She says:

“The electoral system is the foundation on which a democracy rests. Our current ‘First Past the Post’ system is deeply flawed and consequently so is our democracy. I became aware of this most strongly after the 2015 general election when I realised that if we had had proportional representation at that election the Conservatives would not have won; we would not have had a referendum and we would still be in the EU.

“I think electoral reform is vital if we are ever to have a British government that we can respect. Many people are shocked to find just how bad our present system is and just how good a reformed system could be.”
