Campaigning against Armageddon – the road to the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
Nuclear weapons continue to proliferate globally and the UK government is committed to spending over £200 billion to replace Trident. This issue may not currently be at the top of the political agenda but the threats are very real. Also – imagine what we could do with all that money to tackle climate change and poverty?
The UN’s Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons came into force this year and has been ratified by over 50 states, but not the UK. It makes it illegal to use, own, develop or help others develop nuclear weapons.
Round the country the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament is asking communities and MPs to commit to the Treaty and push our government to ratify it. SELHuG has been asked to sign the pledge – should we?
CND National Council and London Region executive members Gini Bevan and David Leal will be speaking to us about the treaty and setting out the arguments for and against nuclear weapons today.
Gini is retired social worker who has been in the peace movement for 50 years. David is an engineer who has worked in the energy industries for more than 40 years, and been a member of CND since he was a student.
