Well done Deptford Pride – a great day!
Lewisham Mayor Damien Egan and Councillor James-J Walsh were amongst visitors to stop by the LGBT Humanists/SELHuG stall and say how pleased they are that local humanists are active in Lewisham.
A sunny day in Deptford market with live music, food stalls and a wide range of LGBT groups represented made for a great day out. Humanist ceremonies raised the most queries, especially funerals, with people concerned that funerals should represent the person who has died. Too many deceased have had their real selves ‘hushed up’ by families who didn’t approve of their LGBT identities, or their atheism, or their choice of friends.
We also had useful conversations with staff from hospitals and education institutions concerned that their non-religious patients and students are not represented or sufficiently provided for.
