New Cross February meeting: Freedom from Torture

When: Thursday 7th February, 7.30pm
Where: New Cross (map)

Torture is one of the most serious human rights abuses and yet it persists in many parts of the world. Drawing on the experience of Freedom from Torture, the only organisation in the UK dedicated solely to the treatment of torture survivors, Sonya will explore rising threats to the global ban on torture against the backdrop of contemporary challenges to the human rights project more generally and invite discussion about strategies for safeguarding this element of the liberal international order.

Sonya Sceats is a lawyer and expert in international human rights. She is Chief Executive of Freedom from Torture, the UK charity that helps survivors of torture to heal and assert their own human dignity and worth. The charity also carries out research and campaigns to hold torturing states to account, and promote the rights of torture survivors.
