On Wednesday, 12th April, Ellie Pocock (from Shelter, the National Housing Charity) discussed the work of the charity.
This led to a wide ranging discussion on the causes of the housing crisis from the shortage of houses; problems of local authorities once again building “Council Houses”; the number of – and reasons why – so many houses remain empty; the problems of renting and, after long years of resistance, the Governments new Rent Act, which replaces some of the old Rent Act conditions.
We also, in attempts to find a solution to the housing problem, discussed increasing the number of units of accommodation built each year, slum housing and squatting.
