We had a really lovely walk through the beautiful Oxleas Wood on Sunday morning, 18th November. We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather – a perfect Autumn day with the trees still full of colour. While we laughed at the suggestion that you can get lost in these woods, you can certainly forget you are in a city as you amble through ancient woodland and glade, until emerging into the open with stunning views across London.
Oxleas Wood nestles on the flanks of Shooters Hill, one of London’s highest points. We climbed Severndroog Castle, an 18th century tower with a viewing platform from which you can see far over the treetops in every direction, one of the most romantic views of London available. There is a café in the castle but we chose the more clearly mapped Oxleas Wood café to start and finish our walk, with plenty of conversation throughout.
