SELHuG social: blind wine tasting on Sunday 12 June
We spent a happy Sunday afternoon sipping red wine and wondering what it was, which country it came from, how much it cost and which we liked best.
SELHuG member David Lewis had been threatening to organise such an event for a while, and some of us were keen to attend.
We arrived to find six bottles with their labels concealed. Conversation dropped away except for the odd “Mmm that’s delicious, must be at least £15” or “Ugh, don’t like that much” and “Hmm I could swear this is South African”.
Some of us felt the need to keep revisiting the bottles, like Winnie the Pooh and his honey pot, long after the forms had been filled and the competition closed.
Then it was time to enjoy the pot luck lunch and good company. Eventually when David revealed what we had been drinking, we “couldn’t believe it!”
Our favourite two wines included the most expensive Chateau Neuf du Pape (see table below) but also one of the cheapest, the Argentinian Malbec. And the £4.50 Merlot from Aldi was very popular too. Least popular were the Rioja and Pinot Noir at £9.50 and £12 respectively.
Thank you David for a really fun event. Looking forward to testing white wine this time next year!
