Thought for the Day campaign notches up successes in first year
Our Thought for the Day campaign has just celebrated its first birthday – and the icing on the cake was appearing on Radio 4’s Today programme in an interview with Mishal Hussein!
SELHuG’s campaign to get humanists included on Thought for the Day began in June 2018 with a demonstration outside the BBC and letter campaign. Since then, we’ve been demonstrating every month, and the letters we hand in have come from a wide variety of supporters including our Honorary Chair Barbara Smoker.
Our request to the BBC, which is set out in a clear statement, has won the support of leading TV personalities, comedians, philosophers, politicians and more including Sandi Toksvig and Alice Roberts – you can see their open letter in the Guardian.
And our perseverance was rewarded with the opportunity to put our arguments directly to Today listeners on 12 June.
Of course, the success we really want is for the BBC to treat non-religious and religious beliefs equally – starting with Thought for the Day. Please support us by going to BBC campaign on our website, signing the statement, writing to the BBC and, if you can, coming along to a demo.
Our next demo is Tuesday 4th July, 4 – 6pm.
