Speakers: Richy Thompson (Humanist UK’s Director of Public Affairs & Policy)
Under Attack: Human Rights in 2022 and how we can defend them
Sexual and reproductive rights, such as women’s right to abortion, have been undermined by government activity in recent months. Brexit has allowed Britain to decouple international trade deals from human rights commitments. Home Secretary Suella Braverman says extricating the UK from the influence of the European court of human rights is a priority.
Richy Thompson, Humanist UK’s Director of Public Affairs & Policy, will unpick what this means for us as UK citizens at a time when populist and polarised politics are riding high globally. He will talk about the campaigns Humanists UK is waging to protect our rights and what we can do too.
Richy works across Humanists UK’s public policy remit and has proven himself a formidable campaigner, achieving widespread media coverage and policy change. He started in 2011 as Faith Schools & Education Campaigns Officer, then Campaigns Manager before starting his current role in 2017. Richy has been Treasurer of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales, member of the Sex Education Forum’s advisory group and a member of the steering groups of Voice for Choice, Assisted Dying Coalition and Accord Coalition for Inclusive Education.
