Review: Black Humanists and Freethinkers

Black free-thinkers, atheists and humanists – a talk from Audrey Simmons

Our May 22nd meeting was a fascinating look at a number of black intellectuals of the 19th and 20th centuries who were social reformers, religious sceptics and civil rights activists.  They included novelists, essayists, poets, politicians, historians, musicians and various artists. All faced up to racial bigotry and religious and/or political or sexual discrimination. Audrey included some ‘well known’ black free-thinkers and others who were less well known to the audience.
