Consecrated in 1840, Nunhead Cemetery is one of the seven privately-owned cemeteries established in a ring around what were then the outskirts of London in the mid-C19th. It was nearly full by the mid-20th century and was abandoned by its owner, the United Cemetery Company. It is now a park in the care of the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery. They hold an Open Day every May and for the last few years SELHuG has had a book stall and information table there.
David Lewis and various members of his family set up the stall and were there all day selling books, DVDs, jigsaws and even a couple of table lamps. He was assisted in the morning by Tony and in the afternoon by Helen. Barbara Chandler, Denis Cobell and John Edwards all turned up for a chat. The sun shone and lots of the park’s visitors stopped to browse the books and even buy some of them and to enquire about the meaning of Humanism. Our gross takings were £132 (with around £100 more raised with online sales later on)- a welcome addition to our bank balance. Congratulations David and thanks for all your efforts.
